1.1 – The purpose and benefits of continuously improving performance at work is important to enhance your career, moving up the organization that you are working in or getting a new job with the new founded skills. Also means that you have great pride in your work and before more efficient. Once you have improved in one thing there will always be something else you can improve on. Having monthly or yearly reviews in your workspace allows you to note down what you are good at and what you need to work on, allowing you to set goals for you to work at. 1.2 – The purpose and benefits of encouraging and accepting feedback from others is important to improve oneself in your work. When you gain feedback from others it enables you to have an outlook on what you are doing correct and what you are doing wrong. If you just go by your own feedback you will never work to your best ability because you wont criticize yourself. Take notice of feedback in all its forms – put all feedback in a curiosity frame: ask yourself how you can use it to avoid failures, or to repeat successes. Feedback can be both formal and informal in nature. For example, formal feedback can be in a meeting and informal feedback can be between colleagues asking how you were or how you did the last assignment. Ignoring feedback means you will just continue to do the same thing in the same way without improving on the way you are doing it. 1.3 – Learning and development can improve your own work, benefit organizations and identify career options by succeeding in workplace training courses, college based courses, private training courses and on the job training, such as shadowing a colleague. These courses may ask for a fee but they are always worth doing. It allows you to learn new skills or try out skills that you have not yet used. Team building exercises are always good if you work alone because it puts you in a different environment, it tests you to see how you would cope. You will gain leadership from these experiences but will also learn how to follow someone other than yourself. This will not only improve your work life but will always show through your work. You will become independent but also know to ask for help or feedback on your work. 1.4 – Possible progression routes for your career would be either moving up in your career for example into management. Or it could be moving to another department you in your work space. This means that you will have to meet new people, use new skills and progress as you would when doing a course. Another progression route would be to change your career completely. You may be doing a job you like but there may always be something you would love to do. Searching on behalf of this dream, you can find courses to do, research how to do it, become an independent company. This will further your career and be useful for future job roles. 1.5 – Possible development opportunities are increasing the skills to do the job at hand or a future job that you are trying to get. Some of the ways to do this are shadowing a colleague, reading articles and journals. Taking notes on new things will help with this. Experience with a new skill, such as meeting new clients. This type of skill you can do at home in front of a mirror or just ask someone to help and let them be the client. The possibilities are endless but being prepared will always be the first thing to remember when you want to develop.

Rich vs. Poor

? A man’s economic status is based solely on his wealth and his material possessions, or lack thereof to define him as being â€Å"rich† or â€Å"poor. † Similarly, these two words, â€Å"rich† or â€Å"poor,† should also describe a man’s character. Rich is characterized as having a lot of money or possessions: valuable, meaningful, or significant. Poor is characterized as deficient in amount or indicating poverty. Yet, when we look at a man or woman, do we judge them by their wealth or by the â€Å"richness† or â€Å"poorness† in their character? Through observations of the rich, a man or woman who has obtained richness often times are lacking in character traits that makes up a good man or women. For example, Donald Trump as a billionaire is shrewd in making money and his personality is one of hostility. We all are familiar with his famous two words,† You’re fired! † Donald Trump, although rich as a child, n ever grasps the fundamental character traits of kindness, gentleness and peace. We can come to this conclusion based on the number of times he was married.This shows the lack of character Donald Trump has because a marriage should be a long term commitment, and it was easy for him to give up on many of his marriages for the next pretty woman who came by in his life. I believe that most people, like Donald Trump, who are rich in material possessions, typically are â€Å"poor† in character. They tend to be very aggressive toward others, not taking into consideration the feelings of others. Most rich people remind me of Ebenezer Scrooge, an unpopular, grumpy, elderly British male human. He was a banker and a usurious moneylender.He worked at a counting house. He was disgusted by the poor and praised workhouses. And he hated Christmas! The point here is, during the night before Christmas, Scrooge was visited by four spirits, who showed him that he hadn't always been so miserable, that he should love Christmas, and that his actions have massive consequences, and if he didn't change his ways, it would be all the worse for him! Many rich people carry a similar attitude of superiority and that there is no need to demonstrate acts of kindness to anyone that is financially below them. Consequently, a man who is â€Å"poor† in material possessions many times is â€Å"rich† in character, which is spiritually defined as the nine fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. Having friends and family members who grew up poor and who worked hard to survive to obtain material possessions, their character was strengthened or made â€Å"rich† as a result of it. They had to do the jobs that many rich people would never do, such as being a maid, construction worker, janitor and many more domestic type jobs.Although they differ in terms of definition, being â€Å"rich† and being â€Å" poor† in character can be one of the same as â€Å"poor† in spirit or humble. For example, my great grandmother was an Indian who was very poor, but you never would have known it because she was humble, kind, loving and a peaceful woman who always shared everything she had. ? Without a doubt, those who are â€Å"rich† and those that are â€Å"poor,† in terms of material possession, share a similarity: the desire to be rich or richer. No one really wants to be â€Å"poor. Those who are rich are rich through inheritance or have mastered the know-how to become rich. Such as Prince Williams, who obtained his wealth from his mother and father, Princess Diana and Prince Charles of Whales. Those who are poor have lived in poverty, for the most part, all of their lives. Many of them have not mastered the know-how to obtain riches. This is evident from looking at the statistics in the inner cities and in very rural areas. Regardless of their economic status, howev er, one desires to be rich and the other desires to be richer.The poor would like to live a stress free lifestyle without worrying if there will be food on the table, and the rich want to obtain their fortunes as well as continuing to have their success grow. ?In terms of how the rich communicate with others, the rich typically show confidence and are normally very secured individuals. The rich communication skills have embellished their ability to obtain wealth and to succeed at many other aspects in their life. The Rich, like Donald Trump have many people looking up to them. So it’s almost a responsibility to show no fear and to take charge in everything they do.If Donald Trump were to show lack of Confidence many people would not respect him or believe he had the skills to succeed as a multi billionaire. ?On the other hand, in terms of how the poor communicate with others they generally lack confidence and many times they are very insecure. The poor’s communication skills are generally slang, bad grammar, or rap which decreases their ability to communicate effectively. My cousin Brittney, who grew up in North Philadelphia, was surrounded in bad neighborhoods, run down schools, and no one to look up to.When her mother finally decided to get her out of the area it was very difficult for my cousin to adapt to a better lifestyle. Brittney was use to the ghetto lifestyle that she thought it was the norm. When Brittney’s mother enrolled her into a public school in Fairfax it was a challenging scene for Brittney. She didn’t know how to interact with the other children because her dialect was nothing like theirs and she was not secure with who she was. Therefore she lost all hope and confidence.There are several ways to work on ones confidence but they have to be willing to work on them. ?Being â€Å"rich† or being â€Å"poor,† as Webster Dictionary defines it, does not determine a man’s richness or poorness in his o r her character but defines it as his economic status. Therefore, regardless of your material possessions, we should all strive to achieve the nine fruits of the spirit. Then we can honestly say that we are rich and/or poor. Nazi Germanys discrimination against the Jews Essay As a result of anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany, a system of violent suppression and control emerged that ultimately took the lives of an estimated 6 million Jewish people Anti-Semitism is an opposition to, prejudice against, or intolerance of Semitic people, most commonly Jews. Anti-Semitism has existed throughout history, since Israels dispersion in 70 AD. In every land in which the Jews have lived, they have been threatened, violated and murdered, century after century. After Germanys defeat in World War I, many Germans found it hard to accept their defeat. These Germans connived a theory that the citizens at home had betrayed them, especially laying blame on Jews and Marxists in Germany for undermining the war effort (http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/riseofhitler/ends.htm). This is the main reason that led to the extreme discrimination and removal of basic rights of Jewish people in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, however, there were many other reasons including Christianitys general hatred for Jewry. Jews were often the victims of Nazism. The first Jewish victims of the Nazi era were 8 innocent people who were killed in the streets on 1 January 1930 by Brownshirts. Soon after that, violence against Jews in the streets became common. Violence was an integral part of the Nazi programme Jews were molested in cafes and theatres, synagogue services were disrupted and anti-Jewish slogans became the daily calling card of Nazi thugs. (Gilbert,2001:31) One particular night of violence, known as Kristallnacht, is remembered with fear. During the night of November 9-10, 1938 thousands of windows were smashed out of Jewish businesses and homes, hundreds of synagogues were burnt to the ground, and more than ninety Jews were murdered. On March 9, 1933 the first Nazi concentration camp was opened at Dachau. On  April 1, a boycott of all Jewish shops was put in place. It only lasted a day, because of threats of a counter-boycott in the USA of all German made goods. However, the expulsion of all Jewish people from Germanys Universities and then the Burning of the Books quickly followed the one-day boycott. The Burning of the Books consisted of 20 000 books burned in a massive bonfire in front of the Berlin Opera House, and opposite the University of Berlin. The books that were destroyed were judged to be degenerate and intellectual filth by the Nazis, many being written by Jewish authors. Also during this time, Jewish scientists and intellectuals were dismissed from their positions, and Hitler was quoted as saying If the dismissal of Jewish scientists means the annihilation of contemporary German science, we shall do without science for a few years. In late 1939, the first ghettos were created in Poland. All Jews were forced to move into a designated area of a city or town, which was surrounded by brick walls topped with barbed wire, and guarded by armed men. SS General Heydrich ordered that the ghettos were to be located on railway junctions, or along a railway so that future measures may be accomplished more easily. Large numbers of people had to share small living quarters, and medical supplies and food were limited. The Jews could only bring into the ghettos what they could carry, and their luggage was searched and pillaged on their arrival. Life in the ghettos was hard, and death rates were high. Most of the deaths in the ghettos were by starvation or disease. In the two largest ghettos in Poland, Warsaw and Lodz, the death toll from starvation alone in the first twelve months after the creation of the ghettos reached approximately 42 000. In most of Western Poland, there were no ghettos. This was because General Heydrich had ordered Western Poland to be cleared completely of the Jews. Immediately after the Germans invaded a town, they rounded up all the Jewish people, made them dig large pits, then shot and buried them just outside the town. The ghettos were also referred to as concentration camps and slave labour camps. This was because while the Jews resided in the ghettos, they could be forced to work up to fourteen hours a day in some circumstances. Some were deported to separate concentration camps where they would work on farms in the country to maintain a food supply for the German war machine. Others who stayed in the ghettos worked for the Nazis in munitions factories making armaments, or for local businessmen who paid the government for the use of slave labour to work their factories. These Jews were mostly considered totally expendable, and were subject to minimal food rations, a lack of medical attention, and violent beatings. At least half a million Jews died as slave labourers. The extermination camps, or death camps were the sites for hundreds of mass murders. Men, women and children were deported from ghettos and concentration camps to these death camps and usually taken straight from the train to a gas chamber where they were gassed to death. A few hundred people were kept alive as slave labour to sort through the clothing and luggage of the victims. A small part of this labour force was known as the Death Jews. These Jews performed the task of removing bodies from the gas chambers and stripping them of anything of value. They then dragged the corpses to a crematorium where the naked bodies were burnt. Most of the labour forces were killed and replaced whenever a new group of deportees arrived. The most infamous death camp was Auschwitz, where mostly deportees from Western Europe and southwest Poland were taken. Lilli Kopecky, a deportee from Slovakia recalls arriving at Auschwitz: When we came to Auschwitz, we smelt the sweet smell. They said to us: There the people are gassed, three kilometers over there. Schottky Diode Lab Report INTRODUCTION A Schottky diode is the common name for a metal-semiconductor junction, it is the work function between the semiconductor and metal that determines whether the junction is ohmic or rectifying [1]. This lab will focus on the fabrication of a Schottky diode and the characteristics they possess. In principle, Schottky diodes are rectifying as the current can only flow one way. They can also handle high frequencies and have lower power loss which makes them ideal for many applications [2]. These include being extensively used in power electronics, general purpose rectifiers and due to its non-linear I-V curves, it is able to be used as a varistor which in turn can be used for voltage suppression [2]. Also there is a low capacitance of the device which makes it more ideal than alternative diodes. OVERVIEW OF THEORY An Ohmic contact is needed on the bottom part of the sample as without this, any measurements taken would create a very high resistance as the semiconductor and the metal probe used to measure would create two diodes facing each other, therefore no current could flow. This is overcome by diffusing indium and germanium onto the semiconductor wafer. Gold is also used to prevent any oxidisation on the sample. The wafer is firstly placed into the tube furnace with the gold, indium and germanium on it then heated at 420 °C for 90 seconds. This is to enable quantum tunnelling so there is little resistance and only the semiconductor and top metal are measured. Figure 1 shows the energy band diagram of a metal-semiconductor junction, which is rectifying as the work function of semiconductor is higher than that of the metal. Figure two is the Schottky diode characteristics and when compared to figure 3, the PN diode characteristics, it shows that the turn on point is lower in the Schottky diode, which means less power is needed to operate, however there is a higher leakage current in reverse bias. DEVICE FABRICATION When working with such easily influenced devices, safety must be upheld at every milestone. This is first enforced by the dress code that is required in the laboratory. Each person must wear an overcoat, safety glasses, gloves, overshoes and a hair net. Due to e ven the smallest particles being able to affect each sample, the dress code is necessary to ensure that very little dust gets into the clean room. Also, there are many different chemicals in the room therefore more precautions are needed when working with them. All guidelines set out by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations must be vigorously followed. Using these guidelines, all chemicals must be used inside a fume cupboard as any spillages will be contained and the fumes can be collected. There are also hot plates and other specialised equipment that should be handled with care to ensure no damage comes to either the user or the machine itself. The cleanroom is comprised of 3 different areas. The first is where the entrants of the cleanroom put the safety equipment on, the second is the main laboratory area and the final is the yellow room. Each room is connected to the next with interlocking doors that only open when all others are closed.   This is because each has a different pressure level due to the need of having to keep as little dust in the main room to stop the contamination of samples. The high pressure level in the main room help to filter out any unwanted particles in the room. The air flow is also monitored to ensure that if there is a drop in pressure, the right actions can be taken to rectify any issues. The yellow room has special lighting due to the sensitivity of the devices that will be later described, however the main difference is that both red and blue colours have been taken out as the devices are easily affected by UV lights. The clean room being used for this experiment is classified as Class 6, this refers to the particle size compared to the maximum particle density. Once all safety aspects have been covered, the process to create the device can begin. The first step is cleaving. This is where the wafer is cut into small sample sizes, usually 3x3mm, as the wafer is very expensive and only a small amounted is needed to complete the experiment. A special machine can be used to perform this however it is also achievable by hand. When the sample has been cut to the necessary size, it is essential that a three stage solvent cleaning method is used. This is to ensure that there is little to no dust on the sample. To complete the three stages, the sample must first be placed into a beaker of N-Butyl Acetate (NBA) that has been heated on a hotplate. Once it has been in the beaker for a short amount of time it must be removed and then cleaned with a cotton swab that has also been dipped in the NBA. This is done by rolling the swab forward whilst pulling back so that as many particles as possible are collected. The sample is the turned 90 ° and swabbed again to collect any particles that may have been missed. This process is again completed but with the sample being dipped in Acetone and then Isopropyl Alcohol to complete the three stage cleaning. After this has happened, the sample is then dried with Nitrogen gas. Due to the small size of the sample, it is much easier to handle on a larger material, such as a glass slide. This is done by heating the slide on a hot plate then melting wax onto it then placing the sample on that. This is then left to cool and will now be ready for the next stage. The next stage is photolithography. This is required to put a pattern onto the sample so that testing of the device can happen and is exclusively completed in the yellow room. As mentioned earlier, the stages throughout this part will mean that the sample will be affected by UV lights so it is necessary to complete this in the designated room. Firstly, the sample is placed on a hot plate for one minute. Then it is placed onto the spinner and spun at 4000rpm for 30 seconds and dried with nitrogen gas. Now a few drops of photoresist are added, this is the solution our sample will be printed with. Again the sample is placed in the spinner 30 seconds and then soft baked on a hot plate for exactly 1 minute. If the sample is baked for too short, the sample will stick to the machine used in the next part and if baked for too long the sample may become damaged. Once the sample is completely dry, it is placed into the mask aligner. Each corner is lined up using the microscope and the camera s o that a complete pattern is across the sample. Once completed, the machine is set for 6 seconds and exposes the sample to UV light, the time needed varies with different materials. The sample is then washed in a beaker of developer solution for exactly one minute as again if the time is not strictly adhered to, it can have adverse effects on the sample. Finally it is washed in deionised water and dried with nitrogen gas. Now the sample has the same pattern which was imprinted from the mask aligner as the photoresist has been taken away from the parts that are needed. Now metallisation must happen as the sample needs a metal layer placed onto it. This is completed by placing the sample in a vacuum chamber and placing a small amount of aluminium inside a tungsten coil. Tungsten is used as the process involves heating the chamber to a point where the aluminium will evaporate but the other materials will not. As the chamber heats, the aluminium creates a thin layer across all of the inside of the chamber, this layer is approximately 0.2ÃŽ ¼m which can be calculated by knowing the amount of aluminium used. As the chamber is a vacuum, there will be no chance of an oxide layer being created which would ruin the sample. Using the vacuum also means that less pressure is needed and that a lower temperature can be used. Due to the evaporation covering the entire surface of the sample, the Lift-off process is needed to remove any parts of the metal that is not needed. The photoresist has protected some parts of the semiconductor from the metal and this needs to be removed to leave the parts where there is a direct contact between the metal and semiconductor. This is done by placing the sample in a beaker of acetone and syringing the sample until the photoresist, and the metal on it, is removed. This process is usually quite quick but can take anywhere up to 20 minutes. The final stage before the sample is ready for experimental observation is to remove the sample from the glass slide. This is completed by heating the sample on a hot plate until the wax has melted. Once this happens the sample is then cleaned with the same three stage solvent cleaning method earlier describe to remove any remaining wax. Finally it should be dried with nitrogen gas, with care taken as the sample could be blown away due to it not being on the glass slide. Once the all stages have been completed the sample is ready for analysis at the probe station. DEVICE CHARACTERISATION Now the slide is ready, the first test can commence. The sample is placed in the probe station and a Source measurement unit (SMU) is connected to the probe station and a computer so the results can be recorded. As the SMU acts as both the source and meter, this is connected to one probe whilst the base is connected to the other. Now the probe is carefully aligned onto one of the small circles that has been created on the sample, with great care being taken due to the sample only having a very thin layer which is easily penetrable. Next, a voltage sweep is created from -3V to 3V with a low current limit so ensure the device is not broken. Once the data has been recorded the probe is moved onto a different circle and the process is repeated. The behaviour of the Schottky diode can be modelled by the following equation: If the gradient of the voltage versus Log(J) is taken, the equation can be rearranged to find n. n is the factor that is used to determine the non-ideality of the diode. The values for the current density and n can be found in table 1. The next experiment is to measure Capacitance verses Voltage. The measurements will be taken in a similar way to the IV measurements however, a LCR meter will be used instead. This is due to the LCR being able to measure capacitance and phase angle. For these measurements, the sweep will start at 0 and be reduced until the phase angle is roughly 75 °. This is due to the need of being in reverse bias. The following formula can be used to find the dopant density of the semiconductor. The dopant density of the sample was found to be ***. The voltage barrier of each diode can be found by taking the gradient of the graphs. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Reviewing the IV graphs it is clear that as the current increases, the linearity of the current density starts to become unstable. This can be explained due to the possibility of defects in the sample. In most industry practices, technicians are not present during the manufacturing fabrication stage and is solely completed by machines. Even though great care has been taken to ensure that the samples used in this exercise have been unaffected by unwanted particles, there is clearly still evidence of impurities throughout the sample. When the data from the CV graphs is reviewed, the observation that as the diameter of each diode increases, the barriers height decreases can be made. Having a higher barrier height is important as this will create a rectifying contact which is beneficial as it only lets the current flow one way. Therefore the conclusion can be made that having diodes with lower diameters have more advantages when creating Schottky diodes. This lab has demonstrated how a Schottky diode has been made and what the different characterises are. Great care has been taken to ensure little impurities affect the sample however there is still room for improvement and shows the essential need to uphold the safety requirements. Due to the low power needed and the fast switching abilities Schottky diodes are able to be used much more universally than standard PN diodes.

This attitude towards cloning has been held into belief up until recently when scientists in Scotland cloned a sheep. And immediately after scientists in Oregon cloned a monkey (Fackelmann 276). The most major breakthroughs of the century in science has occurred and we are not ready for it. The scientific breakthrough of cloning has caused a great deal of controversy in the media and also in the government. The advantages of cloning are tremendous to the human race and cannot be ignored. I believe that cloning humans is what the human race needs to advance. Humans would be stronger, smarter, and more perfect. Scientists could remove bad genes from the parents and replace it with a good one. If one of the parents had a bad gene or hereditary disease this could be removed from the embryo and replaced with another "clean" gene. This process is called embryo screening it is used to determine if the child has received the defective gene. Several embryos could be cloned, then the DNA from one of the embryos would then be removed and standard genetic testing would be used to detect whether or not that embryo contained the genetic disease. If this cloned embryo containd a disease then one of the other embryos could be used for implantation in a parent, this guarantees that the child would be free of genetic disease (Marshall 1025). For those who disagree with cloning I am sure if there child could be saved from a genetic disease they would reconsider cloning. Imagine if one of your friends or family members was in need of a liver or kidney. Most likely you would donate your own liver or kidney to save there life. But then you are one organ short. Well this happens a lot and seems to work fine. But if they needed a new heart you might have trouble finding one. Not if you had a clone of yourself that could supply you with a new organ or maybe even a relatives organ that was naturally stronger (Cloning 1117). Karl Swindlehurst Melancholy of the German Hussars I have currently been studying three short stories. The first of the three short story’s The Melancholy Hussar of the German Legion is one of seven stories from the â€Å"Wessex Tales† . The genre of this story is generally based around love and issues and consequences related to love, and also distresses the complications and coincidences within the love story. The story itself has three main characters in which a love triangle is formed. Phyllis, Humphrey and Mateus are the main characters in which Phyllis was engaged to Humphrey through an agreed marriage arranged by both Humphrey and her father. However that engagement breaks down when Humphrey goes to Bath on a trip which lasted longer than both Phyllis and her father had expected. In this time Phyllis had meet a man named Mateus. Mateus was a corporal in the German Hussars and both Mateus and Phyllis fall in love. The plot is based around the love of Phyllis and Mateus and also how the plan of Mateus going AWOL falling to pieces, and the build up to his death. Mateus and Humphrey are entirely different to each other in a sense of character looks, actions, and general attitude towards Phyllis. We first get a description of Humphrey around line 56, â€Å" Interests within the Court - was one Humphrey Gould a bachelor a personage neither young nor old; neither good-looking nor positively plain† The description is detailed yet vague, it leaves very much to be desired, â€Å" neither young nor old† it’s very bland, imprecise James Hardy is suggesting he is of middle age. In this short description we can devise a brief image of Humphrey. Around line 107 we are introduced with the interesting character of Mateus. â€Å" Her attention was arrested by a solitary figure walking along the path† the introduction that James Hardy has chosen is rather different to Humphrey maybe suggesting in an early stage in the story that he is more important. â€Å" It’s aspect was so striking, so handsome, and his eyes were so blue and sad, abstracted.† The description is of more beauty compared to Humphrey’s suggesting quite obviously Mateus is the better looking man. The acquaintance of Phyllis by both men were distinctively different. Humphrey approached Dr. Grove Phyllis father for her hand in marriage, Humphrey having come from a highly respected family Dr. Grove was overwhelmed, and saw this as an great opportunity for his family. Mateus’ s meeting with Phyllis differed to Humphreys. He was simply walking past and they both noticed each other, on the whole a more romantic meeting.

The 19th Century Novel A Novel is defined as a long story about fictitious characters, written in prose as opposed to poetry. Novels were first written in the 18th Century so by the 19th Century, the novel, often in serialised form was an established form of entertainment which was also helped by the increased adult literacy rate over the whole of the 1800s. The idea of the novel had changed from being purely for the amusement of women to being available to a wider audience, covering a wider variety of issues. It was also over this century that it began to be increasingly acceptable, if not usual to write novels with an underlying moral tone, particularly towards social standards among the lower classes. Another theme of many 19th Century novels was the creation and depiction of strong and great female characters, many through the new generation of female writers. Walter Scott, born in Scotland in 1771 was famous for his escapist literature such as ‘Waverley’ (1814) and ‘Ivanhoe’ (1819), both of these escapist in their setting further back in the past (1745 and Norman Times respectively). Scott had been a poet until he turned to novel writing having been outsold by Lord Byron's poetry. ‘Ivanhoe’, a historical romance is credited as being meticulously researched and seemed to make the novel genre acceptable for men. He attracted a wide range of people through setting it in Scotland and delving into the past, capturing early Victorian’s imaginations with his eight hundred year old characters, seeking refuge in the past and firing their imaginations. ‘Ivanhoe’ famously sold ten thousand copies within its first two weeks and led to a gothic revival, most famously Sir Charles Barry’s Houses of Parliament i... ...long struggle. Both ‘Jude the Obscure’ and ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ were highly criticised at his time of writing, the brutality of his stories shocking the Victorian Public. However, he remains popular due to the strength of his stories and characters. Beyond the six authors that I have touched upon, the 19th Century literature collection is vast, many surviving and others falling into obscurity. Although the early 20th Century writers felt revolutionary in their casting off of the old Victorian novel style, I feel that the 19th Century Novelists were equally revolutionary in what they did for the novel. They created similar novel genres to what exists today and entertained and often shocked an uptight century. They introduced the art of observance and intricacy to the novel form and have formed the basis for the inspiration of novelists ever since.

In a bid to exemplify the notion’s statement, â€Å"pride goes before a fall,† Alice Walker, Joyce Carol Oates and John Updike draw on their main characters Dee, Connie, and Sammy in their stories â€Å"Every day Use,† â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? † and â€Å"A&P† respectively. Dee, Connie and Sammy are an example of how the notion of pride is shown in various ways and how as their pride reaches its peak, they fall. Dee shows her pride in her self centered personality that causes her to lose her appreciation for her mother and her sister Maggie, and causes her to abandon her heritage and become distant. Connie, in â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? † shows pride in her overconfidence that leads her to act impetuously causing her to lose her personal safety. Sammy, in â€Å"A&P† shows pride by simply quitting his job in response to what he views to be an unacceptable behavior by his boss, and wishes to grab the attention of girls that merely recognize him. The Preoccupation with pride that these characters have causes them to eventually fall. Dee’s egocentrism leads her to become unappreciative to both her family and her heritage. Dee reveals her true personality when she responds to her mother for the reason she wants to take the quilts instead of her sister in the quotation, â€Å"Hang them, she said. As if that was the only thing you could do with quilts†(Walker 375). This quotation shows moment when Mama’s attitude changes in the story. Before it, she was submissive to Dee and had much respect for her. After, she realizes that Dee will never be grateful to her or even able to understand that there are other people in this world besides herself. Dee’s pride is shown in her eagerness to take the quilts that are originally for Maggie; She ignores her sister’s feelings and her mother’s will. She fakes love for her mother’s old things because they are expensive, not because she enjoys the history and is proud of her heritage. The pride causes Dee to lose her appreciation for her mother, sister, and heritage and at the same time she loses her mother appreciation for her. Maybe if she did not respond to her mother’s question by simply hanging the quilts, her mother would have given them to her. However, her selfish desires of getting whatever she wants leads her to loose her mother’s respect. Connie’s self assertiveness ended by her loosing her safety. Connie shows her pride in her personal thought as the narrative states, â€Å" actually Connie thought that her mother preferred her to June because she was prettier†(Oates 53). Connie’s overconfidence of her self comes from her beauty. She finds her self to be a beautiful young girl who is a point of interest among the boys. As a result of herself, she builds up her personality with that overconfidence, while at the same time building her pride up. As soon as her pride is at its maximum level, she acts in an impetuous way ignoring the outcomes of her actions, this can be seen through the quotation, â€Å"It was a car she didn’t know†¦ she whispered â€Å"Christ, Christ,† wondering how bad she looked†¦ she went into the kitchen and approached the door slowly, then hung out the screen door, her bare toes curling down off the step†(Oates 54). This quotation shows Connie’s pride and how her pride causes her to fall. Connie’s reaction when she finds a stranger in her driveway by wondering how she looks reveals that her pride takes value over her safety, while the normal thoughts that any body can think about when he finds a stranger entering his driveway is thinking about his safety, Connie is only concerned with her beauty. Connie’s overconfidence pushes her to approach the door which is the beginning of her fall. Connie lives in her small safe life of teenagers, not taking into consideration the outside wild life that she approaches blindly. At the time she decided to open the door, Connie the teenager and the young adult is blended together. Connie is in a stage of maturation— She decides to approach the door for the stranger which is the teenager side of her mind and at the same time she approaches it slowly which is the young adult side of her character. Her action to hang out the screen door is the time when Connie is completely mature and considered a young adult. At this moment, Connie cannot go back to the level of maturity she had when she was a teenager. Connie starts the fall. Connie’s overconfidence causes her to portray an imaginary photo of how the world is and she acts from this perspective which ultimately ends her losing her self security. Sammy resigning his job shows pride, but renders him inferior in society. Sammy shows pride in the way he reacts to his boss, Mr. Lengel. The way he treats the girls is shown in the quotation, â€Å"The girls who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say â€Å"I quit† to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero†(Updike 87). The quotation shows the girl’s reaction to Mr. Lengel’s words. They want to go out of the store as quick as they can.
